Guyanese Fried Bake

Traditionally served during breakfast or as a snack, it reflects the fusion of indigenous, African, and Indian influences in Guyanese cuisine. Today, Fried Bake has found its way into the hearts and kitchens of many Caribbean communities and beyond, celebrated for its simplicity and versatility.

Sift the flour into a bowl.
Add salt, brown sugar, and baking powder to the flour and mix well.
Incorporate unsalted butter into the flour mixture using fingers until evenly distributed.
Make a hole in the middle of the mixture and gradually add water while mixing with an index finger.
Knead the dough for about 2 to 3 minutes until it forms a soft, slightly tacky ball.
Cover the dough with a warm damp cloth and let it rest for about 30 to 45 minutes.
Divide the dough into 6 equal portions using a scale to measure each piece.
Shape each portion into a round ball by tucking the sides underneath.
Roll out each ball with a rolling pin to flatten them slightly.
Heat vegetable oil to 350°F in a deep skillet.
Carefully place the flattened dough into the hot oil, splashing oil on top to help it swell while frying.
Fry until golden brown, flipping occasionally, and remove when air bubbles decrease significantly.
Drain excess oil on paper towels.
