1 cup water

Add the corn meal and salt to a large bowl.

Pour in the water.

Mix by hand or use a spatula until the dough comes together.

Let rest for about five minutes.

Divide the dough evenly. Shape into a ball, then flatten to make a disc.

Heat some oil or butter in a cast iron skillet.

When hot, place the Arepas into the oil.

Cook for a couple of minutes until the side is browned. Flip and cook on the other side.

Transfer to a baking sheet and place in a 350F/170C oven.

Bake for 15-20 minutes.

Remove from the oven and let cool for a few minutes.

Slice in half, carefully. Then fill with your favorite fillings and toppings.
