Cuban Picadillo

Cultural Context

Originating from Cuba, Picadillo is a comforting dish that reflects the island's rich culinary history, blending Spanish, African, and Caribbean influences. Traditionally enjoyed as a family meal, it symbolizes resourcefulness, using simple ingredients to create a hearty dish. Today, Picadillo is cherished not only in Cuban households but also in various Latin American countries, each adding their unique twist.

CUCUmain
6 servings
Servings4
1 pound ground beef
2 medium sweet onions
3 cloves garlic
1 can diced tomatoes
1 medium potato (pre-cooked)
1 cup frozen mixed vegetables
1/4 cup raisins
1.5 teaspoons calabash seasoning (coriander, cumin, oregano, turmeric, garlic powder, black pepper, sea salt)
1 cup beef bouillon
1

Start by caramelizing 2 medium sweet onions and 3 cloves of garlic in a pan over low heat until softened and slightly browned.

2

Add 1 pound of ground beef to the pan, increasing the heat to brown the meat.

3

Once the beef is browned, add in 1 can of diced tomatoes and stir well.

4

Pour in 1 cup of beef bouillon and mix thoroughly.

5

Add 1 medium pre-cooked potato, cut into pieces, to the mixture.

6

Incorporate 1/4 cup of raisins into the beef mixture, stirring to combine.

7

Cover the pan and let the mixture simmer to meld the flavors, checking occasionally.

8

Prepare the calabash seasoning by mixing together coriander, cumin, oregano, turmeric, garlic powder, black pepper, and sea salt. Use 1.5 teaspoons of this mixture in the dish.

9

Taste the mixture and adjust seasoning as needed, allowing it to simmer uncovered if there's too much liquid.
