Cornbread

Cultural Context

Cornbread is a traditional American dish, particularly popular in Southern cuisine. It has roots in Native American cooking, where corn was a staple ingredient. Over the years, cornbread has evolved into various regional styles, often served alongside dishes like chili or barbecue. Its versatility makes it a beloved accompaniment for many meals, especially during gatherings and holidays.

1

Grease an 8-inch cake tin or baking dish lightly with butter.

2

Preheat the oven to 200° fan oven (220° conventional oven).

3

In a bowl, add the five dry ingredients: cornmeal, flour, salt, sugar, and baking soda, and mix well until homogeneous.

4

In another bowl, add all the wet ingredients: buttermilk, melted butter, and eggs, and beat them together until smooth.

5

Once the oven is up to temperature, add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and mix quickly and briskly, leaving some lumps as long as there are no dry spots.

6

Pour the batter into the greased cake tin or baking dish and spread it out.

7

Bake in the oven for about 20 to 25 minutes until golden brown on top.

8

After about 20 minutes, check if it's cooked by testing the middle with a toothpick; it should come out clean.

9

Leave the cornbread to cool for 10 minutes before removing it from the dish.

10

Cut the cornbread into squares to serve.
