Bibimbap

Cultural Context

Bibimbap is a traditional Korean dish that combines rice with a variety of vegetables, meat, and a spicy sauce. It is often served in a hot stone bowl, which creates a crispy rice layer at the bottom. The dish is known for its vibrant colors and nutritional balance, making it a popular choice for both everyday meals and special occasions.

1 tablespoon tuna fish sauce (or soy sauce)
1 teaspoon minced garlic

1/2 tablespoon gochujang (Korean red pepper paste)

meat (beef or chicken)

๐Ÿฅ—Healthier: tofu

๐Ÿ’ฐCheaper: ground pork

Tofu is a plant-based protein, while ground pork is often less expensive than beef.

1

Rinse 2 handfuls of soybean sprouts well and drain the water.

2

Cut half a zucchini into thin matchsticks.

3

Slice 1/4 of a carrot into thin and even pieces.

4

Put all the sliced vegetables into a microwave-safe dish.

5

Add thinly sliced beef to the dish.

6

Sprinkle a little salt and black pepper over the ingredients.

7

Add 1 tablespoon of cooking wine, 1 tablespoon of tuna fish sauce (or soy sauce), and 1 teaspoon of minced garlic.

8

Cover the dish with a microwave-safe lid and cook for 5 minutes, adjusting time depending on your microwave.

9

While the vegetables are cooking, fry 2 eggs in a pan until the yolks are just a little runny (this step is optional).

10

Take the dish out of the microwave; the veggies should have released moisture and flavors should have come together.

11

Add 2 handfuls of washed spinach on top of the cooked vegetables and microwave for just 1 more minute, being careful not to overcook the spinach.

12

Scoop a bowl of warm rice and place the cooked vegetables and beef on top.

13

Add the fried egg and sprinkle some sesame seeds over the dish.

14

Drizzle 1 tablespoon of sesame oil and about 1/2 tablespoon of gochujang, mixing well.

15

If the dish tastes a little bland, add about half a tablespoon of soy sauce.
