Prepare all ingredients: slice unsalted butter into squares and ensure heavy whipping cream is at room temperature.
Pour 1 cup (200 grams) of granulated sugar into a medium-sized saucepan set over medium-high heat.
Stir the sugar constantly with a wooden spoon until it melts completely, which will take about 5-6 minutes.
Watch for the sugar to become slightly sticky, then clump up, and finally melt into an amber-colored liquid.
Once melted, add the room temperature butter and switch to a whisk, stirring constantly until the butter is completely melted and combined with the sugar, about 2-3 minutes.
Slowly pour in the room temperature heavy whipping cream while whisking; it will bubble a lot, so protect your hand with an oven mitt.
Let the mixture boil for one full minute without stirring, observing the bubbling.
Remove the pan from heat and whisk in the sea salt until well combined.
Pour the salted caramel into a jar or glass Tupperware to cool, noting that it will thicken significantly as it cools.
