Swiss Braided Bread

Originating from the German-speaking regions of Switzerland, Swiss Braided Bread, or Zopf, is traditionally enjoyed on Sundays and special occasions. This soft, slightly sweet bread is often served with butter and jam, symbolizing family gatherings and celebration. Today, Zopf is cherished not only in Switzerland but has also found its way into bakeries around the world, often enjoyed as a delightful breakfast or snack.

Make the bread in a bread machine on the dough cycle or by hand.
Combine 1 cup of lukewarm milk, 1 tablespoon of active dry yeast, and 1 teaspoon of honey in the bread machine.
Add 3 and 3/4 cups of bread flour and 1 teaspoon of salt to the mixture.
After the dough cycle is complete, place the dough on a floured countertop.
Cut the dough into three equal pieces and stretch each piece to the same length.
Braid the three pieces together, pinching the ends to seal.
Place the braided loaf on a heavily greased baking sheet with solid shortening.
Cover the loaf and let it rise for about 2 hours until doubled in size.
Preheat the oven to 375°F.
Brush the loaf with a beaten egg using a pastry brush.
Bake at 375°F for 35 to 40 minutes, checking around 25 minutes.
