Pan-Fried Vegetable Buns

Cultural Context

Originating from Taiwan, pan-fried vegetable buns are a beloved street food, often enjoyed as a snack or light meal. These buns celebrate the harmony of fresh vegetables encased in a tender dough, offering a delightful contrast between crispy and soft textures. Today, they are popular in various Asian cuisines, with many variations featuring different fillings.

1

Preheat a cast iron skillet over medium heat.

2

Add a little cooking oil to the bottom of the skillet and swirl it around.

3

Place the frozen buns side by side in the skillet, allowing them to touch.

4

Add 1/2 cup of hot water to the skillet.

5

Cover the skillet with a steaming lid and let the buns cook for about 10 minutes.

6

After about 8 minutes, check the buns; the water should be evaporating and the bottoms should be turning golden brown.

7

Let the buns cook for another 2 minutes.

8

Chop green onions for garnish while the buns finish cooking.

9

Check the bottom of one of the buns for doneness; it should be golden brown.

10

If desired, leave the buns in the pan with the heat off to brown further, or flip them to brown another edge.

11

Top the buns with chopped green onions and sprinkle black and white sesame seeds on top.

12

Serve the buns directly in the pan for a nice crust and warmth.
