Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
Grease a 9-inch (23 cm) round cake pan and line the bottom with parchment paper.
Place the apple slices in a circular pattern at the bottom of the prepared pan.
In a small saucepan, melt the butter and brown sugar over medium heat, stirring constantly until smooth and bubbly, about 2-3 minutes.
Remove from heat, and stir in the cinnamon (if using).
Pour the caramel sauce evenly over the apples in the cake pan.
Refrigerate until the cake batter is ready.
In a bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
In a separate bowl, beat the butter and sugar until light and fluffy, about 2-3 minutes.
Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition, then add the vanilla extract.
Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, alternating with the buttermilk, starting and ending with the dry ingredients. Mix until just combined.
Carefully spoon the batter over the apples and caramel, smoothing the top.
Bake for 40-45 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
Let the cake cool in the pan for 5-10 minutes.
Run a knife around the edges, place a serving plate on top, and invert the cake. Gently lift the pan to release the cake.
Let it cool slightly, then slice and enjoy your cozy, caramel-topped apple cake!
