Chapati has its roots in Indian cuisine but has become a staple in Kenyan households, often served with stews or vegetables. Traditionally made during gatherings and celebrations, chapati symbolizes hospitality and community. Today, it is enjoyed across East Africa, with variations in thickness and cooking methods, reflecting local tastes and traditions.

Whole wheat flour adds fiber and nutrients.

Coconut oil is dairy-free and adds a unique flavor.
Add 3 cups of all-purpose flour to a mixing bowl.
Add 0.5 teaspoons of salt and 1 tablespoon of sugar to the flour and mix.
Make a well in the center of the flour mixture.
Gradually add 1.5 cups of water while mixing to form a dough.
Knead the dough with your hands for about 5 minutes until smooth, adding flour as needed to prevent stickiness.
Add 1 tablespoon of cooking oil to the dough and knead to incorporate it evenly.
Cover the dough with a towel and let it rest for around 15 minutes.
Sprinkle flour on the work surface and roll out the rested dough.
Brush oil over the rolled-out dough evenly.
Cut the dough into strips and roll them tightly to create layers.
Divide the rolled strips into 10 pieces.
Dust the surface with flour and roll out each piece into a circular shape.
Heat a chapati pan (karai) over medium heat without oil.
Place the rolled chapati on the hot pan and cook until bubbles form, then flip it over.
Cover the cooked chapati and set it aside.
Repeat the process for the remaining pieces of dough, dusting with flour as needed.
For the second round, add oil to the chapati while cooking to enhance flakiness.
Flip the chapatis and ensure they are soft with air bubbles inside.
