Chocolate chips are easier to work with and less expensive.
Mix flour, sugar, salt, and yeast in a bowl until smooth and elastic.
Warm milk slightly and add it to the dry ingredients.
Incorporate eggs and mix until a dough forms.
Knead the dough until smooth and elastic, about 20 minutes.
Shape the dough into a ball and let it rise in a warm place for 30 minutes.
Roll out the dough into a rectangle on a floured surface, approximately 60 cm long.
Spread softened butter over two-thirds of the dough.
Fold the unbuttered third over the middle, then fold the other third over that to create layers.
Chill the dough for 30 minutes to firm it up.
Roll out the dough again and repeat the folding process two more times.
Roll the dough into a large rectangle and cut into triangles.
Place a piece of dark chocolate at the base of each triangle and roll up tightly.
Place the croissants on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
Let the croissants rise until puffy, about 30 minutes.
Preheat the oven to 180°C (356°F).
Bake the croissants for 20-25 minutes until golden brown.
