New Year’s Day Cake with Tsoureki Flavor

Cultural Context

Originating from Greece, Vasilopita is a traditional cake served on New Year’s Day to celebrate St. Basil's Day. Families cut the cake to find a hidden coin, symbolizing luck for the coming year. This cake is often flavored with the spices and aromas reminiscent of Tsoureki, a sweet bread enjoyed during Easter. Today, variations of Vasilopita can be found in Greek communities worldwide, each carrying its unique twist while honoring the tradition.
