Ugandan Deep Fried Chapati

Originating from Indian cuisine, chapati has been embraced in Uganda as a beloved street food and staple. Traditionally enjoyed with stews or grilled meats, Ugandan chapati is known for its flaky texture and rich flavor, often enhanced by frying in oil. Today, it has become a popular dish across East Africa, with variations reflecting local tastes and ingredients.
all-purpose flour

Whole wheat flour adds fiber and nutrients.

Coconut oil is a healthier fat alternative.
Apply water in a bowl.
Add enough salt to taste.
Divide the water into two portions.
Add some water to a saucepan, leave some in the bowl.
Add grated onions to the water in the bowl.
Add grated ginger to the bowl.
Add grated carrots to the bowl.
Mix the ingredients in the bowl.
Add 1 egg and mix again.
Add 2-3 tablespoons of cooking oil to the mixture.
Add 1 tablespoon leveled baking powder.
Measure 2 cups of wheat flour and add to the mixture.
Mix slowly, adding more flour or water as needed to achieve a soft dough.
Finish with some cooking oil and rest the dough for 20 to 30 minutes.
Divide the rested dough into even balls.
Heat cooking oil in a frying pan until very hot.
Roll out each ball into a thin circle, using cooking oil if needed.
Deep fry the chapati in hot oil, flipping after 10-15 seconds until golden brown on both sides.
