Activate the yeast by combining 1/2 cup warm water, 1/2 teaspoon sugar, and 1 tablespoon active dry yeast in a bowl. Stir and set aside for 8 to 10 minutes.
In a kneading bowl, make a well and add 1/2 cup plus 6 tablespoons sugar, 2 teaspoons baking powder, and 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon.
Add 2 tablespoons plus 2 teaspoons butter and the activated yeast mixture to the dry ingredients.
Gradually add 6 1/2 ounces of coconut milk, mixing until incorporated.
Add additional warm water (4 ounces) as needed to achieve the right dough consistency.
Knead the dough until it is smooth and elastic, then place it in a bowl (no greasing needed) and cover with a dish towel.
Let the dough rise for 1 hour until doubled in size.
After rising, knead the dough again and shape it into a log to divide into pieces.
Measure and cut the dough into pieces, aiming for about 10 to 12 pieces.
Shape each piece into a bun, pinching the bottom and rolling it on the countertop.
Use some dough to create crosses for the buns, ensuring they have some depth.
Place the shaped buns on two greased baking sheets and cover them.
Let the buns rise for another hour.
Preheat the oven to 325°F.
Bake the buns for about 35 minutes, switching the bottom tray to the top halfway through.
Optionally glaze the buns with a mixture of sugar and water using a barbecue brush.
