Add sugar to warm water and mix until dissolved.
Add yeast to the water and mix, then set aside until it activates for about 10 minutes.
If using a stand mixer, add the yeast mixture to the mixer bowl along with olive oil, white bread flour, and salt.
Mix until combined, then knead with a dough hook for 10 minutes.
If kneading by hand, mix everything in a bowl, turn out onto a work surface, and knead for at least 10 minutes until smooth.
Oil a large bowl with approximately half a teaspoon of cooking oil to prevent sticking.
Place the dough in the oiled bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let proof in a warm spot for 1 hour.
Turn the dough out onto a non-floured surface, flatten it to degas, and form it back into a ball.
Place the dough ball on a large baking sheet, cover with a lightweight cloth, and let proof for 45 minutes.
Preheat the oven to 200°C (390°F) with a small pan of hot water on the bottom shelf for steam.
Dust the dough lightly with flour and score the top with a baker's blade.
Bake in the oven for 25 minutes, turning the bread halfway through for even baking.
Let the bread cool on a rack for 20 minutes before slicing.
