Sloppy Joe Sliders

Cultural Context

Sloppy Joes originated in the United States during the early 20th century, likely named after a Spanish-speaking cook in a Sioux City, Iowa, eatery. This dish became a staple of American cuisine, especially popular in school lunches and casual family meals. Today, Sloppy Joe sliders are a fun, bite-sized variation that adds a playful twist to gatherings and parties, making them a favorite for both kids and adults alike.

ground beef

🥗Healthier: ground turkey

💰Cheaper: ground pork

Ground turkey is leaner, while ground pork is often less expensive.

slider buns

🥗Healthier: whole grain buns

💰Cheaper: plain sandwich bread

Whole grain buns add fiber, while sandwich bread is more economical.

cheese

🥗Healthier: nutritional yeast

💰Cheaper: processed cheese slices

Nutritional yeast is a dairy-free option, while processed cheese is often cheaper.

Worcestershire sauce

🥗Healthier: soy sauce

💰Cheaper: homemade Worcestershire

Soy sauce is lower in calories, and homemade can be cost-effective.

1

Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the olive oil then add the onions. Sauté onions until soft and fragrant, about 1 minute.

2

Stir in beef and cook beef mixture for about 3 minutes, or until lightly browned. As it cooks, break up the meat into smaller pieces. If you like it chunkier, don't break up the beef too much.

3

Stir in the ketchup, tomato sauce, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, and chili powder. Mix until evenly combined. Taste for seasoning and add salt and pepper to taste.

4

Continue to cook at a simmer for about 10 minutes. If your beef is on the fattier side, skim off some of the excess fat.

5

Allow to cool slightly before making sliders. It will help firm up the sloppy Joe mix a little.

6

Preheat oven to 350°F/175°C.

7

Slice the slider rolls in half and place the bottom half on a baking sheet tray.

8

Place a layer of cheese then add any optional toppings you like (pickles &/or red onion, crispy onions, etc). Top with the sloppy Joe mix.

9

Optional - Add another layer of cheese if you like them extra cheesy.

10

Put the top of the rolls back on, over the meat. Brush with melted butter.

11

Bake at 350°F/175°C for about 10 minutes or until tops are toasted and cheese is melted.

12

Separate into individual sliders and serve.
