Heat milk to 75°F and add yeast, mixing it up.
Add 1 egg to the milk and yeast mixture once it's bubbly.
Melt 2 tablespoons of unsalted butter and add it to the flour and sugar mixture.
Knead the dough by hand for several minutes.
Let the dough rest for 30 minutes to 1 hour covered.
Slice the dough into 3 equal pieces and roll each piece out thin.
Cut one piece into a Christmas tree shape for the pattern.
Heat Nutella briefly in the microwave for easier spreading.
Layer the rolled dough pieces, spreading Nutella on the second piece only.
Make a line in the center of the layered dough without cutting all the way through.
Cut the layers for the branches and twist them, pressing down after each twist.
Let the shaped dough rise under a towel for 30 minutes to 1 hour.
Whip an egg and brush it on the dough before baking.
Bake in the oven at 350°F, checking on smaller pieces after 10 minutes.
Decorate with melted chocolate and gum drops after baking.
