Chicken Souvlaki with Tzatziki Sauce

Cultural Context

Originating from Greece, Chicken Souvlaki is a popular street food that showcases the vibrant flavors of Mediterranean cuisine. Traditionally skewered and grilled, it reflects the Greek love for fresh ingredients and communal dining. Tzatziki, a refreshing yogurt-based sauce, complements the savory chicken and is a staple in Greek meals. Today, souvlaki has gained international popularity, often served in pita wraps or as part of a mezze platter.

1

Cut all the fat off of the chicken breasts.

2

Cut chicken breasts into about 1-inch cubes, keeping them the same size for even cooking.

3

Crush the garlic and add it to a medium to large bowl.

4

Add 1 tablespoon of lemon juice to the bowl.

5

Add 1/3 cup of plain Greek yogurt to the bowl.

6

Add salt and pepper to taste.

7

Add 1 teaspoon of thyme and 1/2 teaspoon of mint to the bowl.

8

Add 2 tablespoons of olive oil to the bowl.

9

Whisk the marinade ingredients together.

10

Add the chicken cubes to the marinade and mix until all pieces are covered.

11

Cover the bowl and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, preferably overnight (creator suggests about 5 hours).

12

Prepare tzatziki sauce by shredding half a cucumber after peeling it.

13

Add the shredded cucumber to a bowl.

14

Add about 1/4 cup (4 tablespoons) of plain yogurt to the bowl.

15

Add 1 tablespoon of lemon juice to the bowl.

16

Add about 1/2 teaspoon of garlic powder to the bowl.

17

Add another 1/2 teaspoon of mint to the bowl.

18

Mix the tzatziki ingredients together and season with a little salt and pepper.

19

Cover the tzatziki and refrigerate to let the flavors meld.

20

After marinating, preheat the oven to broil at 500 degrees Fahrenheit.

21

Skewer the marinated chicken onto skewers and place them on a pan to catch drippings.

22

Once the oven is preheated, place the skewers in the oven.

23

Broil for 5 minutes, checking at 3 minutes for doneness.

24

Flip the skewers after the first side is browned and broil for another 5 minutes, checking again at 3 minutes.

25

Remove from the oven when cooked through and enjoy with Greek salad or pita and tzatziki.
