Peel 6 large russet potatoes and cut them into uniform pieces.

Rinse the potatoes and place them in a large pot, covering them by 2 inches with cold water.

Add a little bit of salt to the water.

Turn the heat on high and bring the water to a boil.

Once boiling, turn the heat down to medium and let the potatoes slowly boil for about 15 to 20 minutes until fork tender.

After 20 minutes, drain the water from the potatoes.

Return the drained potatoes to the same pot.

Add butter, milk, salt, and pepper to the potatoes.

Use a potato masher to mash the potatoes until you reach your desired consistency.

If you prefer extra smooth potatoes, you can use a hand mixer.

If the potatoes are too dense, add a little more milk and continue mashing or mixing until you achieve the consistency you like.
