Place the potatoes in a large pot and add enough water to cover them, leaving them whole and unpeeled.

Bring the water to a boil and add in 2 teaspoons of salt.

Reduce the heat and simmer until the potatoes are very tender, about 40 minutes.

Drain the potatoes but save the pot and let them cool until easy to handle.

Peel the cooled potatoes using a paring knife or a paper towel.

Put the peeled potatoes back into the pot and add in the butter, about 1 1/2 teaspoons of salt, and a pinch of pepper.

Mash the potatoes until fluffy and well combined.

Warm the milk in the microwave or on the stovetop before pouring it over the potatoes.

Mash the potatoes just enough to combine with the milk.
