Slice the red cabbage, following the grain.
Cut the cabbage into thin strips.
Put 4 tablespoons of butter into a large pot, cutting it into pieces for even distribution.
Add 1 tablespoon of sugar, 1 teaspoon of salt, and 1/3 cup of water to the pot.
Pour in 1/3 cup of distilled white vinegar and bring the mixture to a boil to dissolve the sugar.
Once boiling, add the sliced cabbage to the pot and cover it with a lid.
Transfer the pot to the oven set at 325°F and cook for 1.5 hours.
After 1.5 hours, remove the pot from the oven and grate about half of a Granny Smith apple, aiming for 3 tablespoons of grated apple.
Add the grated apple and 1/4 cup of currant jelly to the cabbage and mix well.
Return the pot to the oven for an additional 10 minutes.
