Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
Melt the butter in a small saucepan over low heat until fully melted.
In a mixing bowl, whisk together the sugar and eggs until pale and fluffy, about 5 minutes.
Add the vanilla extract and lemon zest to the egg mixture, stirring to combine.
Sift together the flour, baking powder, and salt in a separate bowl.
Gently fold the dry ingredients into the egg mixture until just combined.
Incorporate the melted butter into the batter, mixing until smooth.
Grease the madeleine molds with butter and dust with flour to prevent sticking.
Spoon the batter into the molds, filling each cavity about three-quarters full.
Bake in the preheated oven for 10-12 minutes, until the edges are golden and the centers spring back when touched.
Remove from the oven and let cool for a few minutes before gently removing from the molds.
