Traditionally, it features Kirsch, a cherry schnapps, which adds depth to its flavor. This iconic dessert is often served during celebrations and has inspired numerous adaptations worldwide, making it a beloved treat beyond its German roots.

Greek yogurt reduces calories while maintaining creaminess
Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
Grease and flour cake pans.
Melt dark chocolate and butter together until smooth.
Whisk eggs and sugar until pale and fluffy.
Combine melted chocolate with egg mixture, stirring gently.
Sift flour, baking powder, and salt into the mixture, folding gently.
Divide batter between prepared pans and smooth the tops.
Bake for 25-30 minutes until a toothpick comes out clean.
Cool cakes in pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to wire racks.
Once cool, slice each cake in half horizontally to create layers.
Soak each layer with Kirsch and set aside.
Whip heavy cream with sugar and vanilla until soft peaks form.
Spread whipped cream on the first layer, add cherries, and top with another layer.
Repeat the process for remaining layers, finishing with whipped cream on top.
Decorate with chocolate shavings and curls.
Chill the cake for at least 1 hour before serving.
