Originating from the Caribbean, Jamaican patties are a beloved street food, known for their flaky crust and savory fillings. Traditionally filled with spiced meat or vegetables, these patties reflect the island's vibrant flavors and culinary influences. Whisk together 1 and 1/2 cup flour, 2 and 1/2 teaspoon turmeric, 1 teaspoon baking powder, and 1 teaspoon salt in a bowl.
Break more than a half a cup of butter into bits and mix it in.
Slowly add 1 cup of milk, then dump it all in; if too much milk is added, add half a cup of flour to adjust.
Heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a skillet, then add 1 tablespoon of garlic and 1 cup of onion; sauté until translucent.
Add 2 lbs of ground beef to the skillet; season with 1/2 tablespoon salt, pepper, paprika, 1/2 teaspoon basil, 1 tablespoon curry powder, allspice, cayenne pepper, and a pinch of oregano; cook until browned and thickened to a gravy-like texture.
Let the filling cool before filling the patties.
Roll out the dough and fill it with the meat mixture; fold over, pinch the sides, and press with a fork to seal.
Transfer the patties to a baking sheet and score the tops with an X; apply a light coat of egg wash.
Bake in the oven at 375°F for 10 to 15 minutes until golden brown.
Roll out more dough to make a rectangular shape; cut into three strips.
Add processed cheese and pepperoni to the filling, then braid the strips together.
Apply egg wash and sprinkle sesame seeds on top; bake at 375°F for 10 to 15 minutes.
