Hot Honey

Cultural Context

Hot honey has roots in Southern cuisine, where it is often drizzled over fried chicken or biscuits. This sweet and spicy condiment embodies the balance of flavors that defines much of Southern cooking. Today, hot honey has gained popularity across various culinary scenes, appearing on pizzas, in cocktails, and as a topping for various dishes.

Servings4
1 cup honey
2 teaspoons dried chili flakes
2 teaspoons apple cider vinegar
1

In a 1-quart (1-liter) saucepan, combine honey and dried hot pepper flakes.

2

Slowly bring it to a simmer (on low heat) and simmer for 2 minutes. Stir in apple cider vinegar.

3

Turn off the heat. Let it infuse for 15 minutes before pouring into a jar.

4

To maintain the heat at the same level, remove the chili flakes by straining them (if using fresh hot peppers, you must remove them from the honey before pouring the hot honey into jars).

5

Keep in a cool, dry place.
