Cultural Context

Garlic knots are a beloved Italian-American creation, often served in pizzerias across the United States. They are made from leftover pizza dough, twisted into knots, and baked with garlic and butter. This dish has become a staple appetizer or side dish, celebrated for its buttery, garlicky flavor and soft, chewy texture. 1

Lightly flour the work surface to prevent the dough from sticking.

2

Place the pizza dough on the floured surface and press it with fingers to flatten.

3

Roll the dough into about a 10-inch square.

4

Cut the dough into two rectangles, then cut each rectangle into strips about 1/2 inch thick.

5

Shape each strip into a knot by crossing two pieces and pulling one through the other.

6

Place the knots onto a lined baking sheet using parchment paper or a Sil Pat baking mat.

7

Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).

8

Bake the garlic knots in the preheated oven for about 10 minutes.

9

Flip the garlic knots and continue baking until they are golden brown.

10

In a small saucepan, add butter, olive oil, and chopped fresh garlic.

11

Cook over medium heat until the butter melts and the garlic turns golden brown.

12

Remove from heat and stir in chopped fresh Italian parsley.

13

Once the garlic knots are golden, brush them with the garlic butter.

14

Top the garlic knots with grated Parmesan cheese while they are still warm.
