Traditionally made with dried beans and a variety of seasonings, this dish reflects the resourcefulness of home cooks who utilized available ingredients. Today, variations abound, with many families adding their unique twists, making it a beloved comfort food across the country.

Start by preparing your ingredients: cut up one big yellow sweet onion and a bunch of carrots into small pieces.
Use a 9-quart pot for cooking over the fire.
Add about half a gallon of water to the pot and heat it up over the fire.
Pre-soak the beans for about an hour to allow them to swell and start the cooking process.
Once the water is close to boiling, add the pre-soaked 2 pounds of pinto beans to the pot.
Pour in about 16 ounces of chicken broth for flavor.
Add chicken bouillon cubes to the pot for additional salt and flavor.
Add the cut-up yellow onion and carrots to the pot.
Sprinkle in nature's seasonings generously for flavor enhancement.
Add a couple of tablespoons of sugar to balance the flavors.
Bring the mixture to a nice slow boil, then cover the pot.
Check the beans every 20 minutes to ensure they are cooking properly and that the water level is maintained.
