Mezcal can be a more affordable alternative to tequila.

Agave syrup can provide sweetness with fewer calories.

Juice fresh limes.

Run a lime wedge around the rim of the margarita glass.

Dip the outside of the rim in salt.

In a cocktail shaker, combine 2 ounces of silver or white tequila, 1 ounce of freshly squeezed lime juice, and 1 ounce of Cointreau.

If desired, add 1/2 ounce of light agave syrup to the shaker.

Fill the shaker with ice and ensure the lid is on tight.

Shake the mixture well.

Strain the mixture into the prepared glass.

For the frozen version, cut the peel off 2 limes and add them to a Vitamix blender.

Add 4 ounces of repisado tequila, 2 ounces of Cointreau, and 1 ounce of light agave syrup to the blender.

Add 3 cups of ice to the blender.

Blend until smooth.

Pour the frozen margarita into a prepared glass.

Garnish both margaritas with lime.
