1 lb smoked herring fillet
vegetables (bell peppers, cilantro, onion, leek)
1 tbsp garlic paste
2 tbsp tomato sauce
2 splashes of vinegar
pepper to taste
1 seasoning packet (optional)
1 tsp salt (optional)

3 cups rice

Place the smoked herring fillet in hot water to remove some salt.

After a few minutes, remove the herring from the water and rinse it with cold water.

Chop the herring into pieces and transfer it to a bowl.

Heat a caldero (Dutch oven) and add some oil.

Add 1 tablespoon of garlic paste to the oil.

Add chopped vegetables (bell peppers, cilantro, onion, and leek) to the caldero and sauté them.

Add 2 tablespoons of tomato sauce (or tomato paste) to the vegetables.

Add 2 splashes of vinegar, pepper to taste, and an optional seasoning packet.

Optionally, add 1 teaspoon of salt.

Add the chopped herring to the mixture and sauté for 2 minutes.

Add 4.5 cups of water to the caldero and bring it to a boil.

Once boiling, add 3 cups of rice and stir.

Optionally, add any additional ingredients (like curna) and stir again.

Let the rice cook until the water starts to evaporate.

Once the water is mostly gone, stir the rice and push it to the center of the caldero.

Cover the caldero and let it cook on low heat for 20 minutes.

After 20 minutes, uncover and stir the rice again, then let it cook for another 10 minutes.
