Cuban Coffee

Cultural Context

Cuban coffee, or Café Cubano, has its roots in the 19th century when coffee was first cultivated in Cuba. It reflects the island's rich coffee culture and is often enjoyed in social settings, symbolizing hospitality and warmth. Traditionally served sweet, this strong espresso is a daily ritual for many Cubans and has gained popularity in the U.S. and beyond, with variations emerging to suit different tastes.

1

Scoop 3 tbsp of sugar into a medium cup.

2

Add the ground coffee into the filter basket of the moka pot and press lightly to get a thicker coffee and stronger taste.

3

Pour the hot water just below the steam release valve of the bottom chamber of the moka pot.

4

Place the filter basket into the bottom chamber and screw on the top chamber tightly.

5

Place the moka pot on the burner over high heat with the lid open to see the first stream of coffee.

6

When coffee starts flowing into the top chamber, pour just a little bit into the sugar and stir vigorously, adding little extra each time until you get a paste-like consistency.

7

When you hear hissing sounds, immediately take it out from the burner.

8

Pour the coffee a little bit into the sugar mixture and stir lightly, adding little bit each time until you pour all the coffee.

9

Pour into a coffee cup, jiggle it a little bit while pouring to get the crema.
