beef steak

🥗Healthier: lean turkey

💰Cheaper: pork shoulder

Turkey is lower in fat; pork is often less expensive.

olive oil

🥗Healthier: avocado oil

💰Cheaper: canola oil

Avocado oil has a higher smoke point; canola is budget-friendly.

1

Finely mince onions, cubanelle peppers and set aside. Finely mince garlic and set aside in a separate bowl.

2

Slice golden/yellow onion into rings. Then place into bowl with 1 tsp of vinegar and a pinch of kosher salt. Set aside and let onions + vinegar rest.

3

In a large mixing bowl, season beef with minced cubanelle peppers, onions, garlic, ajicitos, chicken bouillon, Dominican soy sauce, Dominican orégano, sazón, black pepper, fresh lime, chopped cilantro, and olive oil. Mix together until well combined and marinate meat for 30 mins or even overnight.

4

In a skillet, over medium-high heat, heat up canola oil until it begins to smoke. Then add beef making sure to brown on each side. Browning should take about 5-10 mins. Be sure to flip over the beef.

5

Afterwards, add water. I like to add water to the mixing bowl first to capture all of the marinade flavor and then add to the beef in skillet. Braise steak for 30-40mins. Add more water if necessary.

6

Once the steak is tender and the sauce has reduced add in onions. Sauté onions and beef until onions reach your desired softness. Afterwards, remove skillet from heat and let rest for 5 minutes before serving with rice, beans, or your favorite starch like plantains, yuca, or potatoes.
