In another bowl, mix sugar, eggs, buttermilk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract until smooth.
Gradually add dry ingredients to wet ingredients, mixing until just combined.
Stir in boiling water until the batter is smooth and thin.
Pour batter evenly into prepared pans.
Bake for 30-35 minutes until a toothpick comes out clean.
Let cakes cool in pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to wire racks to cool completely.
Frost the top of one cake layer with chocolate frosting.
Stack the second layer on top and frost the top and sides of the entire cake.
Dust with powdered sugar and garnish with dark chocolate shavings.
