Prepare an 8-inch (20 cm) square baking pan by buttering it with melted butter or spraying it with non-stick cooking spray.
In a saucepan over medium heat, melt 4 tablespoons (55 grams) of unsalted butter.
Add 1 cup (100 grams) of chopped pecans to the melted butter and toast them for about 3-4 minutes until the butter is light brown and the pecans are crunchy.
Pour the toasted pecans and butter mixture into the prepared baking pan, spreading it evenly across the bottom.
In a bowl, combine 1/2 cup (100 grams) of light brown sugar and 1 teaspoon (2 grams) of ground cinnamon, mixing well before spreading it over the pecans in the pan.
Drizzle 2 tablespoons (40 grams) of honey over the brown sugar and cinnamon layer in the pan.
Slice one large firm textured apple (about 225 grams) thinly and layer the slices on top of the brown sugar mixture in the pan.
In a mixing bowl or stand mixer, combine 2 1/4 cups (290 grams) of all-purpose flour, 1/4 cup (50 grams) of granulated white sugar, 3/4 teaspoon (3 grams) of salt, and 1 package (2 1/4 teaspoons or 7 grams) of active dry yeast.
In a separate bowl, combine 3/4 cup (180 milliliters) of warm milk (about 125°F or 52°C), 4 tablespoons (55 grams) of melted butter (also about 125°F or 52°C), 1 large egg (about 50 grams), and 1/2 teaspoon (2 grams) of pure vanilla extract.
Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix on medium-low speed until just combined and smooth, about 30 seconds to 1 minute.
Pour the batter over the apple layer in the pan, spreading it evenly.
Let the cake rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about 30-60 minutes.
Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
Bake the cake in the preheated oven until golden brown, about 30-35 minutes.
Once baked, allow the cake to cool in the pan for 10 minutes before inverting it onto a serving plate.
