Traditionally made by slow-cooking apples with sugar and spices, this spread was often served on bread or biscuits. Today, it remains a beloved fall staple, enjoyed in various forms, from breakfast spreads to ingredients in baked goods.

Wash and clean the apples.
Core the apples by chopping them in half and scooping out the core or slicing off the edges and discarding the core.
Chop the apples into smaller chunks.
Sprinkle lemon juice over the chopped apples to prevent oxidation if using a large batch.
Place the chopped apples into a pot.
Add white sugar, brown sugar, a little bit of salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, apple cider vinegar, and a splash of water to the pot.
Turn the heat to medium-high and stir the apples until they start to fall apart and caramelize, about 30 minutes.
Continue stirring until the apples become tender and the mixture resembles a soup.
Once tender, use an immersion blender to puree the mixture until smooth.
Reduce the mixture on the stove until it thickens to the consistency of thick applesauce or jam, which can take 2 to 4 hours.
For the Instant Pot method, add chopped apples, sugar, spices, apple cider vinegar, and water to the pot.
Stir the ingredients, close the lid, and seal the steam vent.
Cook on high pressure for 7 minutes, then allow the steam to release naturally for 10 minutes.
After releasing the steam, open the lid and puree the mixture with an immersion blender until smooth.
Put the lid back on and cook on low heat for 4 to 5 hours to allow it to caramelize and thicken.
For the slow cooker method, add chopped apples (peels included), sugar, spices, and liquids to the slow cooker.
Stir the mixture, cover, and cook on high for at least 1 hour until the apples are soft and mushy.
After 1 hour, use an immersion blender to blend the mixture until smooth.
Cook for an additional 6 hours in the slow cooker to achieve a thick apple butter.
