Apple butter has its roots in colonial America, where it was a way to preserve the harvest. Traditionally made by slow-cooking apples with sugar and spices, this spread was often served on bread or biscuits. Today, it remains a beloved fall staple, enjoyed in various forms, from breakfast spreads to ingredients in baked goods.

Mixed spice can provide a similar flavor profile.
Peel the apples (optional) and cut them around the core into pieces about 1-2 inches in size.
Measure out 6 cups of cut apples, which is about 7 apples depending on size.
In a large saucepan, combine the apples with 1 cup of apple juice or water.
Set the burner on high heat, cover, and bring to a boil.
Once boiling, lower the heat and let it simmer for 20 to 30 minutes until the apples are soft when pressed.
Using an immersion blender, puree the apples until smooth (or transfer to a blender if you don't have one).
Add in 1/2 cup brown sugar, 3/4 cup granulated sugar, 1 tablespoon cinnamon, 1/2 teaspoon cloves, 1/4 teaspoon allspice, and 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg, mixing until well combined.
Return the mixture to the saucepan if using a blender and let it cook down for 30 to 45 minutes, stirring occasionally and keeping the lid on to prevent splatter.
Once done, let the apple butter cool before transferring it into glass jars.
