1 cup grits
4 cups water
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese (optional)
2 tbsp butter (optional)
black pepper to taste

In a medium saucepan, bring 4 cups of water to a boil.

Add 1/2 tsp of salt to the boiling water.

Gradually whisk in 1 cup of grits, stirring constantly to prevent lumps.

Reduce heat to low and cover the saucepan.

Cook for about 20-25 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the grits are thick and creamy.

If using, stir in 1/2 cup of shredded cheddar cheese and 2 tbsp of butter until melted and well combined.
