Cream Cheese Pastries

Cultural Context

Cream cheese pastries, often known as Cheese Danishes, have become a staple in American bakeries and brunch menus. Their origins can be traced back to European pastries, particularly from Denmark, where similar cream-filled pastries are popular. These delightful treats symbolize indulgence and celebration, often enjoyed at gatherings or as a sweet breakfast option. Today, variations abound, with different fillings and toppings, making them a beloved choice in many households.

🥗Healthier: Greek yogurt

Greek yogurt reduces calories while maintaining creaminess

1

In a mixing bowl, place 160 g of softened cream cheese.

2

Add 2 tablespoons of sugar, 2 tablespoons of lemon juice, and 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract to the bowl.

3

Whip the mixture for 3 to 4 minutes until creamy.

4

Take a third piece of puff pastry and cut out round shapes using a cup.

5

Use a slightly smaller cup to create a slight indentation in the center of each round without cutting through.

6

Place the circles onto a baking tray lined with baking paper.

7

Grab about a teaspoon of the cream cheese mixture and spread it around the inside of the indentation.

8

Add strawberries to one pastry and blueberries to another.

9

Lightly beat 1 egg and brush it around the outside of each pastry to help brown it.

10

Sprinkle sugar around the border of each pastry.

11

Preheat the oven to 200°C (400°F).

12

Bake the pastries in the preheated oven for about 15 to 20 minutes until slightly puffy and golden brown.

13

Remove from the oven and let cool for about 5 minutes before serving.
