Dark chocolate chips offer a richer flavor with less sugar.

Preheat the oven to 350°F.

Gather a 9x13 baking dish and a medium to large mixing bowl.

Melt 1 stick of butter in a measuring cup in the microwave for about 1 minute to 1 and a half minutes.

Add 2 and 1/2 cups of whole milk to the melted butter. Optionally, microwave the milk and butter together to prevent curdling.

In the mixing bowl, combine the chocolate cake mix, chocolate pudding mix, and 12 oz of semi-sweet chocolate chips. Mix loosely to combine.

Spread 2 cans of cherry pie filling evenly in the bottom of the 9x13 baking dish.

Pour the dry cake mix mixture over the cherry pie filling, shaking it on top.

Pour the dairy mixture (butter and milk) over the cake mix layer.

Optionally whisk the mixture together for a better end result.

Bake in the preheated oven for 60 to 70 minutes, checking for doneness at 60 minutes with a fork and returning to the oven if needed.
