Homemade Butter

Cultural Context

Butter has been a staple in American kitchens, often made at home for its freshness and flavor. Traditionally, it was churned by hand, a practice that connects families to their culinary heritage. Today, homemade butter is celebrated for its rich taste and the satisfaction of creating something from scratch, often flavored with herbs or spices for a personal touch.

🥗Healthier: Greek yogurt

💰Cheaper: milk + cornstarch

Greek yogurt reduces calories while maintaining creaminess

1

Select whipping cream with a high fat content, preferably at least 35%.

2

Transfer the cream into a spacious bowl.

3

Cut off the upper portion of the cream carton to use as a mold for shaping the butter.

4

Begin whipping the cream using a hand mixer or a stand mixer. You can also manually whisk the cream, but it will take more time and effort.

5

Continue whipping the cream beyond the stage of whipped cream. Observe as it thickens and begins to clump together, indicating the formation of butter.

6

As you persist in whipping, the mixture will suddenly divide into solid butter and liquid buttermilk.

7

Once you observe the buttermilk starting to separate, reduce the mixing speed to prevent splashing.

8

Pour off the buttermilk once the butter has separated. You can save the buttermilk for other recipes, such as pancakes or biscuits.

9

Place the butter solids into a strainer and rinse them with cold water. Change the water twice during the rinsing process.

10

Shape your butter using any mold of your preference, such as the cream carton.

11

Place your homemade butter in the refrigerator. It's ready to be used!

12

Note that homemade butter lacks salt and preservatives found in store-bought varieties, which may result in a shorter shelf life.
