Measure out 3 and 1/2 cups of all-purpose flour, dividing into 1 and 1/2 cups and 1 and 3/4 cups in separate bowls.
Warm 1 cup of whole milk to about 110°F (43°C).
Add 1 packet of instant yeast to the warm milk and stir.
Add 180 g of all-purpose flour to the yeast mixture.
Incorporate 5 tablespoons of softened butter, 3 tablespoons of sugar, 1 egg, and 1 teaspoon of salt into the mixture.
Mix on medium low for about 1 minute until combined.
Add the remaining 1 and 3/4 cups of all-purpose flour to the bowl.
Switch to the dough hook and mix on medium for about 2 minutes until the dough pulls together.
If the dough is too sticky, add flour gradually until it reaches the right consistency.
Continue mixing for about 2 minutes until the dough balls up around the hook.
Transfer the dough to an oiled bowl and cover with a damp cloth.
Let the dough rise in a warm place for 45 minutes to an hour until doubled in size.
Punch down the dough and turn it out onto a floured surface.
Divide the dough into 15 equal pieces, about 55 g each.
Shape each piece into a ball by pinching the edges and rolling it in your hands.
Place the shaped rolls on a baking sheet and let them rise again until puffy.
