Add 4.5 cups of all-purpose flour, 0.5 cup of granulated sugar, and 1 teaspoon of rapid rise yeast into the mixer.
Mix by hand to combine the flour, yeast, and sugar before using the mixer.
Add 1.5 cups of milk to the mixture and attach the dough hook to the mixer.
Mix on low speed until combined, then add 1 large egg and mix for 2-3 minutes until incorporated.
Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and let it sit for about 20 minutes to form gluten.
After 20 minutes, add 1.5 teaspoons of table salt and mix on low for almost 5 minutes.
Cut 1 stick of butter into small cubes and add to the dough, mixing for about 10 minutes until fully incorporated.
Transfer the dough to a large bowl coated with non-stick cooking spray, shaping it into a ball and covering it with plastic wrap.
Let the dough sit on the counter for about 1 hour, then transfer it to the refrigerator overnight.
After refrigerating, remove the dough and place it on a floured cutting board.
Roll the dough out to a rectangle approximately 13 by 18 inches and 0.25 to 0.5 inches thick.
Use a 3-inch round cutter to cut out doughnut shapes, and a smaller cutter for the centers.
Place the cut doughnuts on a pan lined with parchment paper sprayed with non-stick cooking spray, spacing them out.
Let the doughnuts rise until puffy, about 30-45 minutes.
