Today, variations abound, with many regions adding their local twists, making chili a beloved dish across the nation.
ground beef

Add 2 tablespoons of olive oil to a saucepan.
Add 1.5 pounds of ground beef and season with salt and black pepper.
Brown the ground beef until cooked, then remove from the pan.
Add 2 bell peppers and 1 sweet onion to the pan; sauté until soft.
Add 2 tablespoons of minced garlic to the vegetables.
Add 2 15-ounce cans of tomato sauce and 1 8-ounce can of tomato sauce to the pan.
Return the browned meat to the pot along with the vegetables.
Add 1 can of dark red kidney beans, 1 can of chili beans, 1 can of three bean blend, 1 can of green beans, and 1 can of corn to the pot.
Stir to mix all ingredients together.
(Optional) Add a can of beer for flavor.
In a separate bowl, whisk together 2 teaspoons of cumin, 4 teaspoons of chili powder, 1 teaspoon of basil, 1 tablespoon of onion powder, 1 tablespoon of garlic powder, 2 teaspoons of white sugar, and 2 tablespoons of all-purpose flour.
Add the dry mixture to the chili pot and stir well.
Bring the chili to a boil, then reduce to a simmer and cover with a lid.
Simmer for about 1 hour before serving; can keep on warm for a few hours to build flavor.
Serve in a bowl topped with sour cream and cheese.
