Mix warm water and sugar in a bowl; add yeast and let sit until frothy, about 5-10 minutes.
In a large bowl, combine flour and salt; create a well in the center.
Add the yeast mixture and olive oil to the flour; mix until a dough forms.
Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5-7 minutes until smooth.
Place the dough in a greased bowl; cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled, about 1 hour.
Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C).
Punch down the risen dough and roll it out into a rectangle.
Cut the dough into strips for breadsticks; twist each strip for texture.
Place breadsticks on a baking sheet lined with cornmeal; brush with olive oil.
Sprinkle garlic powder, herbs, and black pepper on top.
Bake for 15-20 minutes until golden brown.
Remove from the oven and let cool slightly before serving.
