Open the ground beef and prepare to make two burgers.
Form the ground beef into two-inch diameter balls, making sure they are round and tight.
Flatten each ball using wax paper or parchment paper and a pan until they are about a quarter inch thick.
Fold American cheese into quarters and place it in the center of one patty, adding more cheese if desired.
Spread barbecue sauce on top of the cheese.
Place the second patty on top and seal the edges tightly.
Season the burger with sea salt, garlic powder, and black pepper to help the patties stick together.
Add olive oil to the burger.
Preheat the air fryer to 380 degrees Fahrenheit.
Spray the air fryer basket with olive oil before placing the burgers inside.
Add raw onions to the air fryer with the burgers.
Set the air fryer to cook for 16 minutes at 380 degrees, flipping the burgers halfway through after 8 minutes.
After 16 minutes, check the burgers for doneness.
Prepare the buns by placing two slices of butter on each bun and toasting them in the air fryer at 350 degrees for 3 minutes.
Assemble the burger by adding lettuce, tomato, the cooked burger, and onions to the toasted bun.
