Select large onions, such as yellow, red, or sweet Vidalia onions.
Place the onions on a baking sheet that can contain their liquid.
Bake the onions in the preheated oven for 45 minutes to 1 hour and 15 minutes, depending on their size.
Check for doneness by the smell; when you can smell them, they are getting close to done.
Add a little butter on top of each onion before serving, if desired.
Serve warm.
