Preheat oven to 350°F (180°C).
Prepare a 12-cup muffin pan with either butter or cupcake liners.
In a stand mixer with a paddle attachment, beat 1/2 cup (113 g) of butter on medium speed until creamy and smooth.
Add 1 cup (200 g) of granulated sugar and beat on high speed for about 3 minutes until light and fluffy.
Add 1 teaspoon of pure vanilla extract and 2 large eggs, mixing in one egg at a time.
In a separate bowl, sift together 1 1/2 cups (180 g) of cake flour, 1 1/2 teaspoons of baking powder, and 1/4 teaspoon of salt.
Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture in three stages, alternating with 1/2 cup (120 ml) of milk, starting and ending with the flour mixture.
Mix until just combined, scraping down the sides of the bowl as needed, and avoid overmixing.
Use an ice cream scoop or two spoons to fill the muffin cups evenly with batter.
Bake in the oven for 18-22 minutes, checking with a toothpick for doneness.
Allow cupcakes to cool completely before frosting.
To make the frosting, beat 1/2 cup (113 g) of butter until smooth.
Add 2 cups (230 g) of confectioner sugar and 1 teaspoon of pure vanilla extract, mixing on low speed to avoid sugar dust.
Increase speed and beat for about 3 minutes until light and fluffy.
Thin the frosting with milk or cream, adding a little at a time until desired consistency is reached.
Frost the cooled cupcakes using a knife or spatula, or pipe the frosting using a pastry bag with a round or star tip.
Decorate with sprinkles or candy as desired.
