Bring 4 cups of whole milk and 1 can of water to a rolling boil in a pot.
In a separate bowl, mix 3 egg yolks with 1 cup of cornstarch and 1 cup of water.
Once the milk is boiling, temper the cornstarch mixture by adding it one scoop at a time while stirring continuously to avoid scrambling the eggs.
Add the tempered cornstarch mixture back into the boiling milk mixture while stirring continuously.
Turn the heat to low-medium and continue stirring until the mixture thickens.
Add 1 cup of sugar and stir until it melts down.
Add 1 stick of butter to the mixture and let it melt down while stirring.
Add a shot of vanilla extract and continue cooking until the desired color is reached, as per the recipe.
Remove from heat and let the custard cool slightly.
Cut the homemade yellow cake into squares and arrange them neatly in a dish.
Use a fork to poke holes in the cake squares to allow the custard to soak in.
Pour the custard over the cake, filling in all the holes and smoothing it out on top.
Let the cake cool off before serving.
