Originating from France, croissants are a beloved pastry known for their flaky texture and buttery flavor. Traditionally enjoyed at breakfast or as a snack, they have become a symbol of French culinary art. Today, variations abound globally, with fillings ranging from chocolate to almond, and methods of preparation evolving to include frying for a unique twist.

In a mixing bowl, add flour, dry active yeast, sugar, vanilla extract, and a pinch of grated nutmeg.
Stir the dry ingredients together.
Add warm milk and an egg to the mixture.
Add salt and mix all the ingredients together to form a dough.
Knead the dough for about five minutes.
Add softened butter to the dough and knead for an additional five to seven minutes until stretchy.
Add about a teaspoon of oil to smooth the surface of the dough.
Cover the dough with clean film and let it rest for at least one hour or until it has doubled in size.
Once doubled, sprinkle flour on the work surface and deflate the dough.
Transfer the dough to the floured surface and flatten it with your fingers.
Roll the dough into a thin square shape, about four to five millimeters thick.
Cut off any excess dough and divide it into two equal parts, then into three parts each to form triangles.
Brush the top of the dough with water before rolling to help it stick together while frying.
Cover the rolled dough with clean film and let it rest for at least one hour until it has doubled in size again.
Preheat oil for frying.
Fry the croissants, turning them until they are beautifully golden brown.
Once golden brown, remove them from the oil and place them on a paper towel to absorb excess oil.
While still warm, toast the croissants in sugar if desired.
