Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).

Brush melted butter into two round layer cake pans and dust with flour.

In a bowl, combine 1/4 cup softened butter and 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar, mixing until well combined.

Add 1 unbeaten egg to the mixture and beat until well mixed.

Sift in 2 cups of bread flour and 3 teaspoons of baking powder, mixing until combined.

Add 2/3 cup of milk gradually, mixing to incorporate.

If the batter separates, add more flour to bring it back together.

Melt 2 oz of unsweetened chocolate in a small saucepan and add to the batter along with 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract and 1/3 cup of powdered sugar, mixing until smooth.
