Baked onions are lower in fat.
Fill a large pot with water, add salt, and bring to a boil over high heat.
Prepare a large bowl with ice water to stop the cooking process of the green beans.
Trim the ends of 1 pound of green beans, making sure they are all the same length.
Once the water is boiling, add the green beans and cook for 2-3 minutes until tender and bright green.
Transfer the green beans directly into the ice bath to stop the cooking process for about 2 minutes.
In a large bowl, combine 1/4 cup of milk, 1 (10.5 ounce) container of cream of mushroom soup, 1/4 teaspoon of salt, and 3/4 teaspoon of black pepper. Stir to combine.
Drain the green beans and add them to the soup mixture, stirring until evenly coated.
Transfer the mixture to a 1.5 quart casserole dish and tamp down to make it even.
Bake in the preheated oven at 350°F for about 30 minutes until the edges are bubbling.
After 30 minutes, stir the casserole and top with 3/4 cup of crispy fried onions.
Continue baking for an additional 5 minutes until the onions are nice and brown.
